How can we improve ChatSecure - Android?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.

  1. Keep running in background

    ChatSecure fails to run consistently in the background. Often you will need to start the app up again (e.g. enter password, sign in) when returning to the app, and then later discover you were not available for other people to chat to you.

  2. remove the bubbles

    Add an option to show the messages in table format and not in bubbles.
    On samller screen the bubbles are a waste of space

  3. resize the top bar

    Add an option to resize the top bar, when there is the name and the attach button.
    On smaller screen is too large

  4. what happened to changing online status???

    did the menu options move somewhere or have they been completely removed?? i don't like the new UI, it's disorganized as hell.

  7. More IM protocols

    It would be fine if ChatSecure supports more protocols like Pidgin or IM+ in future.

  8. Better OTR compatibility to other messengers

    ChatSecure’s OTR encryption is not compatible to that of IM+ for example (and had also sometimes problems with the Cyberpunks’ OTR plug-in in Pidgin).

  9. Sorting contacts like in Pidgin

    Possibilities for sorting the contacts like in Pidgin (favorites, alphabetically, by status, by activity and/or manually) would be fine.

  10. Enterkey sending to be made optional. Touchtyping on touchscreen never without typos! Backspace and enter are close!

    Love the app, my only disturbance is SENDing a message when I try to CORRECT a typo, because ENTER-key sends what's typed. Make it optional!

  11. Make the app show verbose connection details

    An app that relies as much on security as ChatSecure should show more technical information for a server-connection. I want to see encryption- standards, strengths, mechanisms and all sorts of nerdy tech-stuff.

  12. How long after a failed verification-answer can one re-send the verification?

    In the confusion of why there are two identical verification buttons for verifying contacts in ChatSecure, i used both of them to my friend. After i had verified her our chat became green. But then she answered the verification-question wrong as it contained an unnecessary punctuation, thus the second verification failed. So even though i already had verified her, this happens:

    1. Even though our chat is green and thus apparently encrypted, we aren't allowed to see each other's messages. They show up showing "Encryption failed in step 4".

    2. After restarting the app, our chat is now red, and we can't…

  13. More accurate timestamp

    Having seconds included in the timestamp is useful for conversations, at least for me. I'd also prefer the iso-standard yyyy-mm-dd (if the year is even necesssary).

    I appreciate that this might make the interface look more complicated, so maybe the date format should be configurable. I tend to think that there can never be too many settings given that they are well organised.

  14. reopen the chatlog on after closing a conversation

    So sometimes i need to close a conversation, cause there a WAY TO MANY open Chats.
    The problem: After reopening a conversation with someone, the log of the previous conversation is gone!
    This is especially bad when want to continue a conversation later.

  15. Sync conversations across platforms?

    So I'm testing switching my IM needs all to ChatSecure for my Android devices, and Pidgin with OTR on my desktop systems, getting away from using the standard chat within Gmail. I notice I can IM just fine from either Pidgin on my desktop or ChatSecure on my Android devices, however the conversations do not sync between the devices: Whether that is ChatSecure on two different Android devices, Pidgin on a desktop, or any combination. The conversations are all "islands".
    In Contrast, when using google's Hangouts on Android, and the web-based chat inside gmail on a browser, those conversations remain…

  17. Ability to export chat with full emoji support (or even including image attachments!)

    It would be great if ChatSecure could include support for saving/exporting our chat conversation. The app already allows users to decide if the conversation needs to be encrypted - so why not allow users to save/export conversations if they are deemed not as sensitive? Basic support of this feature should allow conversations to be saved/backed-up/exported with full text, date/time-stamp, as well as emoji. Additional enhancements could include the image attachments (or even other attachments if it were possible) inline in the conversation as well.

  20. Work with Kontalk.net and other XMPP based messengers to improve push

    A solution to the disconnection problems would be a push service as far as i understand. Developers of Messenger Kontalk are proposing a XMPP Extension to realize just that. Such an extension should support using different push services, for example Apple, Google and Mozilla's.
