How can we improve ChatSecure - Android?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  1. Ability to export chat with full emoji support (or even including image attachments!)

    It would be great if ChatSecure could include support for saving/exporting our chat conversation. The app already allows users to decide if the conversation needs to be encrypted - so why not allow users to save/export conversations if they are deemed not as sensitive? Basic support of this feature should allow conversations to be saved/backed-up/exported with full text, date/time-stamp, as well as emoji. Additional enhancements could include the image attachments (or even other attachments if it were possible) inline in the conversation as well.

  2. how to open a transferred file?

    Receiving a text, jpg, or other formats files, we can see just a vfs: path.
    In fact I nether know hi to open that.
    Could be great if just touching the balloon CS to offer the possibilitie of decrypt and leave the open file on a path or open using default app for these files.
    Nowadays, touching the message balloon, with the vfs: path nothing happens.

  3. remove the bubbles

    Add an option to show the messages in table format and not in bubbles.
    On samller screen the bubbles are a waste of space

  4. Autodelete messages or chat

    The possibility to set a timeout period after that the messages are deleted by all endpoints of chat.

  5. Keep running in background

    ChatSecure fails to run consistently in the background. Often you will need to start the app up again (e.g. enter password, sign in) when returning to the app, and then later discover you were not available for other people to chat to you.

  7. Multi-User Jingle (multimedia sharing in group chats)

    This is a feature I use regularly on WhatsApp -/voice notes or sharing images in a group chat.

  9. Explain why permissions are required in Play store description

    I believe there's a bug/known issue in the compiler that requires identity. But this permission request seems strange for a secure chat app.

  11. Barcode scanner required to import otr keys

    Why does secure IM app require me to install a barcode scanner that requires access to, among some others, my contacts? I would like to manually type password from keysync window to ChatSecure but there is no such option. Or am I missing something?

  13. Comparable feature list

    Hi,
    CS on android is great; but besides some missing feature (working MUC ;) ) I'm missing a detailed list of which XEPs are supported and what features CS on Android entails.

  14. Nice to have WhatsApp contacts onboard.

    Must still have my WhatsApp open for contacts that do not use ChatSecure. It is difficult to get them to change but it would be nice if ou could chat to them and then get them to change when they can not open encrypted message.

  15. More accurate timestamp

    Having seconds included in the timestamp is useful for conversations, at least for me. I'd also prefer the iso-standard yyyy-mm-dd (if the year is even necesssary).

    I appreciate that this might make the interface look more complicated, so maybe the date format should be configurable. I tend to think that there can never be too many settings given that they are well organised.

  16. Avoid spying FCM (former GCM, Google Cloud Messaging)

    Google's Firebase spying framework is in direct opposition to the interests of users who want security (security includes privacy).

    Chatsecure need's a message delivery system that respects users privacy.

  17. How long after a failed verification-answer can one re-send the verification?

    In the confusion of why there are two identical verification buttons for verifying contacts in ChatSecure, i used both of them to my friend. After i had verified her our chat became green. But then she answered the verification-question wrong as it contained an unnecessary punctuation, thus the second verification failed. So even though i already had verified her, this happens:

    1. Even though our chat is green and thus apparently encrypted, we aren't allowed to see each other's messages. They show up showing "Encryption failed in step 4".

    2. After restarting the app, our chat is now red, and we can't…

  18. Explain where/how Off the Record "OTR" comes into play

    I notice when I end a chat and initiate a new one with the same contact all the previous messages are gone. Is that OTR working or just a bug?

  19. Integrate "Pretty Easy privacy"

    Pretty Easy privacy (PEP) is an Opensource Encrypting tool. At moment integrated into Enigmail (current development) and Outlook(Add-in). It encrypt Mails with PGP and it allow, if sender and receiver both use PEP, sending Message over GnuNet instead over Mail protocol.

    Allow to receive PEP encrypted emails without a configured E-Mail account.

  20. resize the top bar

    Add an option to resize the top bar, when there is the name and the attach button.
    On smaller screen is too large
